Random Team vs. Pick Your Team (PYT)
You’re looking at a break listing and one team break has individual team prices from $20 to $120. Another lists every spot at $45 flat. Both are team breaks. Which do you buy into?
A PYT Break gives you control over which team’s cards you receive. A Random Team Break assigns teams by randomizer at one flat price. If you’re locked on one team, PYT usually makes more sense. If you’re flexible and price matters more, Random Team Breaks get interesting fast.
What is a Pick Your Team (PYT) Break?
A PYT Break is a team break format where you pick your team before the boxes open and receive every card featuring players from that team.
Team pricing starts with the product checklist or the full card list for that release. A team with a marquee rookie or strong autograph depth costs more than a weaker team in the same product. Popular teams sell first-come, first-served, so loaded teams move fast.

What is a Random Team Break?
A Random Team Break is a team break format where every spot is priced the same and your team is assigned by a live randomizer after all spots are sold.
Because you don’t know your team at checkout, the flat spot price reflects average value across the full team pool. Assignments happen live on-stream, which is part of the appeal, as everyone sees the teams hit the screen at the same time.

Here’s the tradeoff. A PYT Break can cost more when the team is loaded, but you know exactly who you’re buying. A Random Team Break keeps the price flat, but you have to be comfortable riding with whatever team the randomizer gives you.
* Skunk risk means the chance of walking away with little or no meaningful pull value from your assigned team.
When should you choose a PYT Break?
If you collect cards for one specific team and only want that team’s cards from the break, then a PYT Break is the right choice. If most of the strongest rookie cards in that product belong to one or two teams, like the team that drafted the #1 overall pick in a Bowman Chrome release, then PYT lets you lock that team before it sells out. The caveat is price: star-heavy PYT spots can cost far more than a flat Random Team Break spot, so the premium only makes sense when that checklist is strong.
Choose a PYT Break when:
-
You’re a single-team collector and don’t want cards from rival teams.
-
You’re chasing a specific rookie and that team’s slot is still available.
-
The product is premium, such as National Treasures or Prizm, where checklist strength can swing hard by team.
-
You’ve researched the checklist and the PYT Break price reflects real card depth, not just demand around one name.
-
You want to avoid landing a low-checklist team in a Random Team Break.
Experienced breakers calculate each team’s price based on card market analysis for that team. Buyers should look at the checklist before paying a premium. A team with one star and shallow autograph depth can be overpriced if the actual pull rate doesn’t support the number. Before buying, compare the checklist against the pricing and view our current team sheet.
A PYT Break is strongest when your goal is narrow. If you’re building a Miami Dolphins PC, for example, buying a Houston Texans PYT spot because the price looks better doesn’t help much. Control is the point.
When should you choose a Random Team Break?
If you’re flexible about teams and want the lowest possible price, then a Random Team Break is usually the better fit. If you enjoy the live reveal, watching the randomizer run with everyone, Random Team Breaks offer an experience PYT doesn’t match. The catch: you can land a low-checklist team.
Choose a Random Team Break when:
-
You’re open to any team and aren’t locked into one roster.
-
You want the lowest possible price for a given product.
-
You enjoy the live randomization moment as part of the break.
-
You’re willing to buy more than one spot for broader team exposure.
-
You plan to trade or sell your assigned team slot if you land a team outside your collection focus.
Buying two or three Random Team Break spots in the same break is a common collector move. You get exposure to multiple teams, often below the cost of one premium PYT Break spot.
Team trading is also part of the Random Team Break format on many streams. If you land a team outside your collection focus, another participant may want to swap before the break closes. But check the rules before assuming trades are allowed.
How does the product type affect the choice between PYT and Random Team Breaks?
For rookie-heavy products like Bowman Chrome or Bowman Draft, PYT spots for teams with top-pick prospects can carry a steep premium. If you’re chasing that prospect’s first autograph, paying the PYT Break price may be worth it. If not, the Random Team Break route can be the better play.
For veteran-heavy or multi-star products like National Treasures or Flawless, checklist strength is often spread across more teams. Value may come from Hall of Famers, active superstars, RPAs, patches, and low-numbered autos across several franchises. That narrows the gap between PYT and Random Team Break pricing. For base or mid-tier products like Topps Series 1 or Score Football, team checklists usually sit closer together, so a Random Team Break can make more sense.
Use this as a quick product guide:
-
Bowman Chrome / Bowman Draft – PYT for teams with top draft picks. A Random Team Break is fine if you’re not chasing those names.
-
National Treasures / Immaculate – PYT premium can be justified for top checklist teams, while veteran-heavy and multi-star checklists make Random Team Break spots competitive for mid-tier teams.
-
Prizm Football / Basketball – PYT for teams with active superstars or high rookie value. A Random Team Break is competitive in the middle of the checklist.
-
Topps Series 1 / Score Football – Random Team Break offers strong value. PYT premium is harder to justify.
Checklist depth changes every year. So a premium PYT team last season can be mid-tier this year if the rookie class changed or the manufacturer checklist is thinner than expected.
That matters most in autograph-heavy products. If a team’s best player doesn’t have autos in the set, the PYT Break price should reflect that. If it doesn’t, you’re paying for brand heat instead of checklist strength.
Which format offers better value for money?
Neither PYT nor Random Team Breaks offer objectively better value every time. The better value depends on the product checklist and what you’re trying to collect. PYT eliminates team-assignment uncertainty and guarantees your team’s cards, while Random Team Breaks offer a lower flat entry price and the chance to land a premium team at that base price.

Be honest about skunking. In a Random Team Break, the flat price keeps the entry cost lower, but it also means you may walk away with a weaker team’s base cards instead of meaningful pull value.
A PYT Break has its own miss, too. You can pick the right team, pay the premium, and still watch the product break cold for that roster. For some collectors, that control is worth the extra cost. For others, it isn’t.
Ready to choose your card break format?
PYT Breaks give you guaranteed control over which team’s cards you receive. Random Team Breaks offer a lower flat entry price and the live randomization experience. The better format depends on your team loyalty and budget. Check the team checklist before choosing either format, especially if it’s your first break, then watch our live card breaks to see both formats in action.
Frequently asked questions about PYT and Random Team Breaks
Is a PYT Break or Random Team Break better for first-time card break buyers?
For most first-time buyers, a Random Team Break is the best starting point because flat pricing keeps the entry cost lower and the live randomization introduces the community format. A PYT Break makes more sense if you already collect one team and want that roster. In that case, PYT certainty can be worth the premium.
Can I trade my team assignment in a Random Team Break?
In most Random Team Breaks, participants can trade or sell their assigned team before the break closes. The transaction is usually handled directly between collectors in live chat or a community channel. Not every breaker has a formal policy, so check the rules before buying. This trade option is one reason experienced collectors buy multiple Random Team Break spots: if they land a team outside their focus, they may be able to swap before the break closes.
Why do some teams cost more in a PYT Break?
PYT spot pricing reflects the expected pull rate for each team in a specific product checklist. Teams with active stars or high-volume autograph signers usually cost more because their cards appear more often or carry stronger market value in that set. The price of each team is calculated based on card market analysis for that team before the break goes live. Before committing to a slot, view our current team sheet and compare the team price to the actual checklist.
Does the sport make a difference between PYT and Random Team Breaks?
Yes. The sport affects how value spreads across the team pool, especially in Random Team Breaks. MLB has 30 teams, while NFL has 32, and rookie-heavy products can create a wide gap between the strongest and weakest teams. For Pokemon box breaks and other non-sport products, the PYT Break vs. Random Team Break question usually doesn’t apply the same way because breaks aren’t normally structured by sports teams. A random box break may still use random assignment, but it's not the same decision as choosing between a team-based PYT Break spot and a Random Team Break spot.
